[【Department of Health and Sports Science】Elucidation of Brain Fatigue Mechanism Induced by Intense

During sports activities, you may have seen or heard of situations where concentration breaks or judgment errors occur. Students in the Department of Health and Sports Science may have experienced such situations as athletes, right?
We call the decline in cognitive function (prefrontal cortex functions such as attention and selective judgment) caused by exercise cognitive fatigue, and have been investigating its mechanisms.
From previous research, we developed an experimental model that induces cognitive fatigue by exercising for just 10 minutes in a hypoxic environment using hypoxic gas (13% oxygen concentration) that mimics a high-altitude environment equivalent to 3,500m (Ochi et al., NeuroImage, 2018).
In this study, it was demonstrated that the decrease in arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) (hypoxemia) that occurs during exercise is involved as a mechanism of cognitive fatigue from exercise in hypoxic environments.
