Chronic Stress Assessment Using Hair Hormones and Heart Rate Variability

A research group led by Lecturer Genta Ochi is conducting research combining heart rate variability and hair hormones (cortisol and oxytocin) as biomarkers for assessing chronic stress and mental health in athletes. We have now published these research findings as a preprint.

Research Overview

In this study, we continuously measured morning heart rate variability and hair hormone concentrations in elite female long-distance runners over an extended period, examining how these relate to mental and physical states and performance.

By combining heart rate variability and hair hormone assessment, it may be possible to obtain complementary information across different timescales, which is expected to contribute to the development of conditioning indicators useful for athlete mental health and performance management.

This paper is currently submitted to a peer-reviewed academic journal.
